Lush Magazine's mission is to be the preeminent source for quality up to date fashion news and advice; analysing the contemporary trends that impact every individual. We understand the importance of fashion for our young audience and strive to reflect that. Many of our models come from the high fashion scene, however we often use normal people just like you. This inspires an authentic feel representing our readers.

We seek to distill information to provide in short entertaining articles, inspiring conversation and interaction between our readers. We aim to represent all social groups and genders within our young sophisticated audience.

We want our articles to be informative, humorous, witty, with slight attitude and strong confidence. Our editorials aim to be bathed in light, creativity and difference with our models radiating happiness and real beauty. We want to make the world a better place through our marketing and media.

Website Research - Codes and Conventions

Website Research

Usability

Easy to use website with clear areas for navigation between the pages of the site.

Front Page

The front page is used to highlight the main content of the website, having small images accompanied by text to link to the articles with further details. The front page must have links to all other page of the site situated at the top of the page clearly. The magazine name and sell like should be placed at the centre top of the page to be the first site of the viewer. There should be at least two different models and ethnic groups represented on the front page. There should be the Bauer logo placed somewhere viewable from the initial look at the front page to make readers aware it is a part of the Bauer Media Company.

Colour

A mainly black and white colour scheme should be used, this ensures ease of viewing and navigating. However the images of the articles should be very bright and have high contrast to attract the reader to view it.

Content

The website should have at least two fully written articles and one video with audio; these should be clearly visible. All pages should have a button at the bottom to return to the top. Just like the magazine's the website should be targeted towards a culturally sophisticated 16-25 class AB demographic. There should also be a page where the magazines missions statement is posted.

Audience Interaction

On at least one page there should be an indicator for feedback in the form of comments that anyone can post on.

Website Examples

Audience

My target audience is a culturally sophisticated 16-25 class AB demographic; to gather what they wanted in a fashion magazine and website I gathered a focus group of 20 people to find out their opinions. This group consisted of 15 females and 5 males as mainly I am targeting females, 10 of the females and 3 of the males were white British, 3 of the females and 2 of the males were Black British and 2 of the females were Asian. All of the focus group was within the culturally sophisticated AB demographic with all but one female and one male being ages 16-25 years old. The other male and female we aged in their low 30's, I chose this as although I am targeting 16-25 year olds I wanted to gather a slightly older perspective to see if our magazine and website would also be desirable for an older market.

I contacted them all via email and non of the group had any contact with another, to aid in creation of my magazine and website I asked them some questions to be able to target them better, below you will find their responses.

Do you prefer to see models who are like you or models that are clearly fashion models?

The overwhelming response from all was that they prefer seeing models that look like them rather than models that have no imperfections and no life to them, many added that they liked seeing emotion from models rather than a robotic look like they said many fashion models have today.

What types of clothing would you like to see on a new magazine?

Most of the group responded saying that they like to see clothes that they could buy from a high street shop, this is because then they can aspire to look as good as the models shown. Three of the 16-25's and both of the 30's said they dislike when models are wearing "over revealing" clothing as it sets unattainable aspirations for viewers that negatively affects their body image. (I thought this point was very interesting and will make sure not have my models wearing over revealing clothing).

What types of articles / sell lines would attract you to buy a new fashion magazine?

All of the group had strong feelings towards the importance of showing how to style simple clothing items such as hoodies as that it what many of them wear regularly, many also mentioned they view fitness as a very important aspect in their lives. A few people also mentioned that they are interested in makeup tutorials. Two of the females voiced their interests in gossip related articles interesting them.

Do you use the contents page to help you decide whether to buy the magazine?

The responses were unified in that they didn't have the time to look at the contents page when they bought a fashion magazine, they said a bright front cover was important to make it stand out as it was first impressions that decided if they would buy the magazine or not.

What elements would you like to see on the website for the magazine?

The majority stated that they liked articles taking up most of the room on the front page so they have a varied choice, they also liked some sort of video to watch on the front page as they scrolled. Many also stated they liked to see pictures of some of the models to get an idea of the style of model the fashion company uses. All of the boys and some of the girls also liked being able to interact together and with the creators through the site. (Therefore I will have an area for comments so they can discuss topics).

Planning

These are examples of magazines which inspired my own

https://www.vogue.co.uk/

Vogue inspired many parts of my website, on every page I had a small picture of one of my front covers with the price and a button linking to the page you can subscribe to the monthly magazine, this was placed in line with the header at the top of each page, exactly like Vogue. I also copied the style of their magazine page, with almost identical layout as I showed all the necessary information very clearly.

https://www.allure.com/

Allure's front page layout inspired my front page as it has a large article taking up the entire width of the page at the top followed by smaller articles (see picture below), although on my website I chose to have some smaller articles with the large article at the below the smaller ones, I did this as it gives the viewer more to excite them as soon as they see the site and as they scroll down they are met with a larger article to conclude the page.

https://fashionmagazine.com/

Just above my articles I had a line stating 'top stories', this was inspired by Fashion Magazine's use of the headers, which separate each individual section (see picture below).

The below images show the early stages of production, this was mainly to see if the photo's I had taken would still look high quality when blown up to a larger size. Furthermore it allowed me to play with the typography and from this I found that when the text hugs the model and moves around their body it looks good, this is also shown in my magazine examples, many of which do this.

Ideas for my website video -

- Do a picture at every angle around my model facing them while they sit still, this shows the scenery of which we are shooting in
- A 'Vogue 73 questions' styled video
- A panorama of area where I shot the pictures
- In where we are shooting have the model walk across the left to right and do it multiple times with different clothes and then blend them all so it looks like they are changing clothes as they walk (do for all models in all locations)
- Video of model doing multiple poses in a location I took photos, some with emotions such as laughing and looking like they're having fun, this humanizes them and makes them seem like a normal person rather than a model
